Edinburgh Festival
Edinburgh is best-known for its August festival: a huge, month-long arts extravaganza that actually includes several festivals running at the same time. Among them are:
Edinburgh International Festival
Presenting a rich programme of classical music, theatre, opera and dance during a three week period in late summer the Edinburgh International Festival is one of the most important cultural celebrations in the world.
Established in 1947, the Edinburgh International Festival was to enliven and enrich the cultural life of Europe, Britain and Scotland and to Сprovide a platform for the flowering of the human spiritТ after the devastation of World War II. These founding principles are as relevant today as they were nearly 60 years ago.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts Festival in the world - featuring theatre, comedy, dance and physical theatre, music and musicals, childrenТs and street theatre, exhibitions and events, magic and mime, and just about anything in-between. This Festival more than any other transforms the streets of Edinburgh city centre in the month of August, with buskers, street theatre and live entertainment filling nearly every cobblestone. The 2008 Edinburgh Festival Fringe is host to 31,000 performances, 2000 shows and 18,000 performers who will entertain more than 1.5 million people in 250 venues across the city.
